Important EYFS Framework Updates

Do you work in a group childcare setting?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework became effective in April 2017 and is a set of guidelines and requirements that all early years providers in England must follow. It covers the education and care of children from birth to age five and is regularly reviewed and updated to ensure that it remains relevant and effective. One of the sections outlines the expectations surrounding qualifications and training including Paediatric First Aid. The specific guideline around First Aid training is all early years providers must have at least one person on site at all times who holds a valid* Paediatric First Aid certificate. This person must also be available to accompany children on outings.

*valid certification is a minimum of 12 hours training time conducted by a reputable training provider. Whilst e-learning can be completed for some elements of the training, there MUST be classroom contact time in order for practical elements to be correctly assessed.

The importance of paediatric first aid cannot be overstated. It is essential that those caring for young children have the knowledge and skills required to deal with emergency situations that may arise. These minimum requirements in the EYFS Statutory Framework ensure that all early years providers are taking steps to keep children safe and provide appropriate care.

In the most recent update of the  the statutory framework document, the wording was updated to state that all staff who obtained a level 2 and/or level 3 qualification since 30 June 2016 must obtain a paediatric first aid qualification within three months of starting work in order to be included in the required child-to-staff ratios. Whilst this was generally considered the intention of the previous document, the wording was not clear and could have been misinterpreted however now it is clear that ALL staff must hold a relevant First Aid qualification.
