Preparing for Benedict's Law

What Schools Need to Know Now

The UK government is currently consulting on updated statutory guidance that will significantly strengthen how schools manage medical conditions particularly severe allergies.

Often referred to as “Benedict’s Law”, these changes are expected to come into force from September 2026, with the consultation closing in May 2026. While the final wording is still subject to change, the direction is clear, Schools will be expected to take a more structured, proactive, and accountable approach to allergy safety.

What is changing?

The proposed updates build on existing guidance around supporting pupils with medical conditions but introduce clearer expectations and stronger accountability, particularly around allergies. From what has been published so far, schools will likely be required to:

- Maintain a dedicated allergy safety policy
- Ensure all staff receive appropriate training
- Provide access to adrenaline auto-injectors (including spare devices)
- Implement individual healthcare plans (IHPs) for pupils with allergies
- Record and review incidents and near misses

Although these are not entirely new concepts, the key shift is that these expectations are moving from recommended good practice to formalised auditable requirements.

Why this matters

For many schools, allergy management has historically relied on a small number of trained staff or informal processes.The new direction suggests a move toward:

Whole-school responsibility (not just first aiders)
Consistent systems and documentation
Evidence of training and compliance
Preventative risk management, not just emergency response

This reflects a broader safeguarding mindset ensuring that all staff are prepared and not just a select few.

What this means for staff training

One of the most significant implications is around training. Current proposals indicate that staff should be able to:

Recognise allergic reactions, including early signs of anaphylaxis
Respond quickly and appropriately in an emergency
Administer adrenaline auto-injectors with confidence
Understand their role within the schools' allergy policy and procedures

Importantly, this goes beyond traditional first aid training. A general first aid certificate is unlikely to meet the new expectations and therefore schools will instead need training that reflects real-world scenarios, school environments and practical decision-making.

A shift towards systems and not just skills

Another key theme emerging from the consultation is the importance of systems and accountability. Schools are expected to demonstrate:

Clear policies and leadership ownership
Effective communication between staff
Robust record-keeping (including near misses)
Regular review and improvement of practice

This suggests that compliance will not be judged solely on training delivery but on how well the entire system functions.

What we expect moving forward

While the consultation is still ongoing and the final guidance will not be confirmed until May 2026, several outcomes appear likely:

1. Allergy safety becomes standard compliance

Much like safeguarding or fire safety, allergy management is likely to become a core operational requirement for all schools.

2. Increased focus on evidence and audit

Schools will need to show:

who has been trained
what systems are in place
how incidents are recorded and reviewed

3. Greater emphasis on prevention

Reducing exposure to allergens, through better planning, communication and awareness will be just as important as emergency response.

4. More consistent training across all staff

Training is expected to extend beyond teaching staff to include:

lunchtime supervisors
temporary and supply staff
support staff

A note on the consultation

It is important to recognise that:

❗ The guidance is still in consultation and may change before being finalised in May 2026.

However, the overall direction is unlikely to reverse, and schools that begin preparing early will be in a stronger position when the requirements become statutory.

How schools can prepare now

Even at this stage, there are practical steps schools can take:

Review current allergy policies and procedures
Identify pupils with allergies and check IHPs are in place and up to date
Assess current staff training levels
Consider how incidents and near misses are recorded and reviewed

Early action now can reduce pressure later and help ensure a smooth transition to the new requirements.

Final thoughts

Benedict’s Law represents an important shift in how schools approach allergy safety moving from reactive response to proactive, whole-school management. While we await final confirmation of the guidance, the message is already clear:

Allergy safety is becoming a fundamental part of school safeguarding and compliance.

What England Rugby’s First Aid Guidance Means for Community Rugby Clubs

Grassroots rugby is built on people who care. Volunteers who mark pitches before work. Coaches who give up evenings. Committee members who keep everything moving behind the scenes. It’s community. It’s commitment. It’s physical.

And when a player stays down after a tackle, all of that energy changes in an instant.

In that moment, someone steps forward. Usually, that person isn’t a medic. They’re a coach. A parent. A teammate. A volunteer who simply cares enough to act.

At FabTraining, we’ve delivered accredited Emergency First Aid at Work courses across Yorkshire since 2010. Through our work with rugby clubs, one thing became increasingly clear: Standard workplace first aid training doesn’t always reflect the reality of a rugby pitch. That’s why we developed our Rugby & Sporting Injury Module.

What England Rugby Actually Requires

There is still a common belief within some clubs that first aid training must be delivered directly by the RFU in order to “count”.

That perception dates back to earlier structures and RFU-branded training pathways. But current guidance is clearer and more practical. England Rugby’s Player Safety Regulation 9 requires clubs to complete a first aid risk assessment and ensure an appropriate level of first aid and immediate care cover is in place for training sessions and matches.

The RFU also recommends that appointed first aiders are trained to at least Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) level, or an equivalent qualification, with rugby-specific elements appropriate to matchday environments.

That wording is important.

It focuses on:

The level of qualification
The appropriateness of training
The club’s risk assessment
Rugby-specific relevance

England Rugby sets the standards and regulations for player safety. It does not operate as a national first aid awarding body. Emergency First Aid at Work is a regulated workplace qualification delivered by accredited providers across the UK.

What matters is competence, relevance and preparedness. Not the logo on the certificate.

Why “Rugby-Specific” Matters

Rugby is not an office. On a touchline, decisions have to be made quickly and confidently.

Is this concussion or fatigue?
Should we move this player?
What are the red flags?
Who takes control?
When do we call 999?

These are rugby questions. We saw clubs meeting minimum guidance but still feeling uncertain when real incidents occurred. Volunteers would say: “I’ve done first aid, but I’m not sure how that applies here.”

That gap between qualification and confidence is exactly what our Rugby & Sporting Injury Module was designed to close.

Built From Within the Game

FabTraining isn’t separate from rugby. We are part of it. We sponsor local teams. We support women’s and youth rugby.

When something serious happens, and occasionally it does, trained clubs act decisively rather than hesitantly and it's that difference that is powerful.

KCSIE 2025: What's Changing & What Schools/ External Providers need to know!

Keeping Updated

Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) is the statutory safeguarding guidance that schools and colleges in England must follow. The current version (2024) is already in force but the next update has now been published and officially takes effect from 1 September 2025.

And while KCSIE is written for schools and colleges, it doesn’t stop at the school gate.

If you deliver services into education such as training, alternative provision, consultancy, extracurricular support, ICT, mentoring, pastoral services or onsite activities, these updates will influence what schools expect from you too.

At FabTraining, we make it a priority to stay on top of statutory changes and ensure we adapt our service provision to comply so here’s a clear overview of what’s new, why it matters, and how schools and their partners can make sure they are doing the right thing:|

Key Changes in KCSIE 2025 (In Plain English)

1️⃣ Online harms now include misinformation and fake news

The definition of online risk has been expanded. It’s no longer just about inappropriate content like self-harm, grooming or extremism, it now includes:

Misinformation and disinformation
Conspiracy content
Fake news and harmful influence

This has implications for staff training, digital monitoring, curriculum planning and online safety policies.

2️⃣ Generative AI is officially on the safeguarding radar

For the first time, KCSIE links directly to government guidance on the safe use of AI in education. Schools must now consider generative AI tools in their:

Filtering and monitoring systems
Staff and learner digital conduct
Safeguarding risk assessments

Any organisation supplying tech, digital learning tools or training will need to be aligned with this thinking.

3️⃣ Cybersecurity is tied directly to safeguarding

The update reinforces that cyber safety is part of child protection. Schools are now referred to the DfE cyber standards, and there’s an expectation that any platform, data handler or IT partner follows suit.

If your organisation handles school data or digital delivery, this one’s for you.

4️⃣ Alternative provision (AP) rules have tightened

Safeguarding expectations around AP are much clearer and more formal. Schools must now:

Get written confirmation of DBS and vetting checks from providers

Know exactly where a pupil is during AP placements (including satellite sites)
Review placements at least every half term
Record and act on safeguarding concerns swiftly

This affects training providers, off-site education partners, tuition services, behavioural placements and mentoring programmes.

5️⃣ Virtual School Head responsibilities have widened

Virtual School Heads will now support some children in kinship care arrangements (not just those looked after by local authorities). This means:

Broader collaboration between agencies
More professionals involved in safeguarding decisions
Increased need for good information sharing

What Schools Will Expect from External Partners

From September 2025, schools may start asking providers, trainers and organisations for clearer evidence of safeguarding compliance.

That could include:

✔ Up-to-date safeguarding and child protection policies
✔ DBS checks and safer recruitment processes
✔ Staff safeguarding training dates and certificates
✔ Information on digital conduct and online safety
✔ Proof of appropriate filtering, monitoring or data security
✔ Transparent AP records (locations, staff, contacts, reviews)

This shift isn't about box-ticking it’s about shared responsibility. Schools will increasingly need to show that everyone they work with meets safeguarding expectations.

What This Means for Businesses, Trainers and Service Providers

Whether you’re delivering a one-day workshop, a long-term programme, mentoring support or contracted services, schools will expect you to be:

🔹 Prepared - not waiting to be asked for documentation
🔹 Vetted and trained - with evidence to hand
🔹 Aligned with KCSIE expectations, especially around digital safety
🔹 Clear about staff deployment and activity locations
🔹 Open to due diligence checks

A quick “yes, we’ve got a DBS” won’t cut it anymore. The bar is rising, and those who can provide reassurance upfront will stand out.

CPR in the Curriculum

In recent years, the British Heart Foundation has successfully campaigned to make CPR and first aid a mandatory part of the PSHE curriculum in UK secondary schools. It’s a huge step forward but why was it needed?

43% of UK adults (around 23 million people) have never been trained in CPR.
80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home.
Sadly, survival rates remain at less than 1 in 10.

From Side Hustle to Trusted Experts

Fifteen years ago, FabTraining was just a name scribbled in a notebook, a spark of an idea born from a passion for helping others and a belief in doing things the right way. Today, we are proud to stand as one of the region’s most trusted names in first aid and workplace compliance training. We have grown, evolved, and adapted but one thing has never changed: our commitment to empowering people with confidence, skills, and care.

As we mark this major milestone, we are taking a look back at where it all began, the incredible journey so far, and what lies ahead.

From Kitchen Table to Training Hub: The FabTraining Story

In 2010, Bruce launched FabTraining as a side hustle while working full-time. Like many small businesses, it started with one simple goal: to make first aid training more engaging, more practical, and more human.

“It was a ‘sink or swim’ moment,” Bruce reflects. “I saw an opportunity to do things differently and to make training that people actually enjoyed.”

By 2016, that opportunity became a full-time commitment. FabTraining moved from evenings and weekends into a full-time operation, powered by a growing reputation and word-of-mouth recommendations. In 2018, Emma joined the business full-time after years of supporting behind the scenes, bringing a fresh perspective and leading the way in hospitality training.

That same year saw our first dedicated training venue, modest, but ours in that we no longer were relying on businesses having space or spending out on private venue hire. And we didn’t stop there.

Timeline of Milestones:

2010 – FabTraining is born (although back then it went by it’s Sunday name of “The First Aid Box Training Solutions”
2016 – Bruce takes the leap and goes full time
2018 – Emma joins full time; hospitality courses launched
2019 – Moved to larger premises due to growing demand
2020 – Relocated again to our current home; added health & safety training
2020 – Covid strikes: pivoted to online learning and added First Aid for Mental Health
2022 – Bruce earns FREC5 qualification; expanded into pre-hospital care training
2023 – Secured separate office facilities to support a growing team
2025 – Celebrating 15 years of growth, resilience, and impact

Through it all, one thing has remained constant, our dedication to delivering high quality, engaging training that equips people with real world skills.

The Heart of FabTraining: People First

At FabTraining, we don’t just teach courses, we build confidence. Whether it’s a parent learning CPR for the first time, a construction worker brushing up on safety skills, or a schoolchild practicing the recovery position, we focus on making every learner feel capable and supported.

And in 2025, we proudly introduced a female CPR manikin to challenge stigma, raise awareness, and make our courses more inclusive.

Why This Milestone Matters

You might be wondering why 15 years matters?

Because it means 15 years of:

It also means resilience. Like many businesses, the Covid pandemic hit us hard but we didn’t stop. We adapted. We created online content, introduced new courses, and kept training essential workers when it mattered most.

This milestone is also a reminder of how far we’ve come, not just in size or reach, but in impact. From our first tiny training room to the full suite of services we offer today, we’ve built something that truly helps people.

“Training can change lives. Sometimes it even saves them. That’s why we do what we do,” Bruce says.

Making First Aid Accessible for All

At FabTraining, we believe that everyone should have access to essential first aid skills—no matter their age, background, or circumstances. That’s why we created the Fab First Aid Fund, a unique initiative that helps make first aid training more accessible to local schools, groups, and community organisations.

🌟 Why We Set Up the Fund

The idea for the Fab First Aid Fund came from our deep-rooted belief that first aid saves lives and that knowledge should never be limited by budget. We saw firsthand how many schools and small community groups struggled to access training due to financial constraints. So, we decided to take action.

By setting aside a portion of our profits the Fab First Aid Fund was born. It allows us to provide free or heavily subsidised training to those who need it most.

🛠️ How It Works

Each year, we allocate a set budget from the fund to support local initiatives. Schools, clubs, and community groups can apply for support by filling out a simple online form. We review each request carefully, making decisions based on impact, need, and availability.

In the past, the Fab First Aid Fund has supported:

Free CPR training for local sports clubs
First aid awareness sessions for parent groups
Mini Medics courses in primary schools
Equipment donations to youth groups

Every penny in the fund is used to promote lifesaving knowledge and community resilience.

🧒🏽 The Latest Initiative: Free Mini Medics for Schools This Summer

We're excited to announce that this summer term (May–July), we’re inviting local schools to apply for a free Mini Medics first aid session, funded entirely by the Fab First Aid Fund!

The Mini Medics programme is designed for children aged 7–11. It’s a fun, interactive way to introduce young people to basic first aid and emergency awareness. From learning how to call 999 to understanding how to help someone who’s unresponsive, these sessions build confidence, skills, and a real sense of responsibility.

We’re aiming to deliver sessions inat least 10 local schools but we’d love to do more, depending on demand and available funds.

Brewster’s Adventures: Spreading Festive Cheer and Fun!

This year, we decided to welcome an office Elf on the Shelf as a fun way to showcase our personality on social media and give our followers a laugh. We held a competition to name him and since being "delivered" Brewster brings a playful twist to our everyday activities, reminding us that work can be both productive and enjoyable. Whether he’s decorating, learning new skills, or just causing a little mischief, Brewster embodies the festive spirit and helps us connect with our audience in a unique and entertaining way.

Since joining the team, Brewster has quickly become a star of the office, bringing energy, creativity, and plenty of laughs wherever he goes. From organising holiday plans to taking on some unusual challenges, Brewster has been on quite the adventure lately. Here’s a glimpse into what he’s been up to!

Decking the Halls

Brewster got busy helping us get into the festive spirit by decorating the office. However, it seems his artistic touch raised a few eyebrows with some unusual ornament placement! Despite the hiccups, he’s made sure the space was filled with holiday cheer.

Gift Giving Gone Gourmet

When it came time to prepare Christmas gifts for our valued customers, Brewster volunteered to help. But we caught him sneaking a few too many treats while packing the goodies! Whether it’s chocolate or candy canes, it’s clear Brewster has a sweet tooth. Thankfully, the gifts still made it out on time, with only a few missing coins...

King of the (Marshmallow) Jungle

Inspired by the latest series of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Brewster decided to recreate his own Bushtucker Trial. Instead of bugs, he filled his helmet with marshmallows and claimed victory in the sweetest way possible! While his version may not be jungle-approved, it definitely earned him a laugh and plenty of fans in the office and and our social media platforms!

Cocktails and Responsibility

Brewster took on the role of cocktail bar waiter mixing up fun mocktails for the team. While he’s no expert mixologist, it was a perfect moment to remind everyone about responsible alcohol service. For those looking to work in hospitality, don’t forget that we offer licensing qualifications, including the Personal Licence. Brewster’s key takeaway? Always follow the rules and serve responsibly—even if you’re just pretending!

First Aid Fun

Brewster recently got hands-on with our first aid training materials—though his bandaging skills might need some work! Whether it’s handling minor cuts or being prepared for emergencies, Brewster understands the importance of first aid knowledge. For anyone looking to boost their confidence in helping others, our first aid courses are the perfect way to learn lifesaving skills. Brewster’s advice? Always be ready—you never know when a little know-how can make a big difference!

Brewster’s also been hard at work preparing for the year ahead. He’s played a big part in helping us launch our 2025 course calendar, which is now live on the website!
